Hero MotoCorp, the country’s largest two-wheeler maker, is offering a discount of Rs 5,100 on all its scooters till Mar 12 as long as the purchase is made in the name of a woman.
Given that Hero’s scooters typically range from around Rs 64,000 to Rs 75,000 on road, this translates to a discount of around 7-8%.
In addition to the above discount, Hero MotoCorp is also offering another Rs 3,000 loyalty discount for those who are trading in their existing Hero twowheeler.
The move comes at a time when people are increasingly beginning to back to their offices, but are not able to rely on public transport because of the risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus.
The offers are available only on scooters and not on motorcycles.
“When the women of today choose to step out and embrace their freedom, the women of tomorrow will get the confidence to spread their wings and fly,” the company said.
It is not clear if the offer is also valid on electric scooters — a segment where Hero is a pioneer.
Scooters make up only around 8% of Hero MotoCorp’s two-wheeler sales, but have been growing their share in the overall pie.
Last financial year, Hero MotoCorp sold 3.91 lakh scooters in the first 11 months of the financial year, while this year, that number has risen to 4.06 lakh. At the same time, the total number motorcycles sold by the company has fallen during the same period, from 56.85 lakh to 48.09 lakh units, due to the COVID-19 lockdown.
The company is also one of the pioneers in India as far as bringing out lithium-ion battery-powered electric scooters are concerned.
Lithium-ion variants of models like NYX and Optima offer a range of 100-110 km for a single charge and top speeds of around 45 km per hour.
However, at a price of around Rs 80,000 on road, they cost about Rs 30,000 more than the models based on the traditional lead-acid batteries, though the range per charge is more than double.
Hero MotoCorp has also assumed distribution responsibilities for Harley Davidson bikes in India.
Having set up a new business vertical for Harleys, the company has on-boarded 11 existing Harley-Davidson dealers across the country so far.
