Tata Projects, Capacite & CITIC to redevelop BDD, world’s largest Chawl

A consortium of three companies — Capacite Infraprojects, Tata Projects and CITIC Construction said they have received a Letter of Acceptance from Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board for the redevelopment Mumbai’s BDD Chawls — the biggest such project in India.

The redevelopment of BDD chawl involves the tearing down 121 chawl buildings that are around 100 years old and house 9,394 households. A chawl, or row-house, is a linear building in which one flat usually comprises 1 large room that has been subdivided into a kitchen and a living-cum-bed room.

It is not clear whether the companies will handle all the 121 buildings or only part of the project.

Capacite, which is the lead member of the consortium, said the project covers CTS No. 1539 & 1540 at Lower Parel Division, Worli, Mumbai.

Capacitle Infraprojects Limited will have 37.1% share of the contract, worth 4,357.12 Crore. The share of Tata Projects Limited in the consortium will be 36.9%, while CITIC Construction Co Ltd. will have 26% share.

The project involves designing the service and infrastructure of the mini city as well as co-ordination and construction of rehabilitation, sale, commercial, amenities and any other structure.

It will also involve the construction of habitable temporary transit camps, work of on-site, off-site infrastructure and landscaping and performing various co-ordination activities, it added.

The project will be executed through a special purpose vehicle.
