3,328 complaints about NRI husbands received by external affairs ministry in 3 years

A total of 3,328 Indian women complained to various Indian embassies and missions about their treatment at the hands of their non-resident Indian husbands in the last three years, the external affairs minister said.

The highest number of such complaints were received last year, at 1,510.

The first 11 months of the current year have seen a total of 1,022 complaints from wives over issues such as cruelty, abandonment, request for divorce and so on.

In 2015, the total number of such complaints was 796.

The complaints were received at the offices of the ministry of external affairs and various mission and posts across the world.

The ministry said nearly all the cases were dealt with by giving the women information about how to serve summons on their husband, how to file a case in India, how to get the ministy to issue Look Out Circulars, how to get the husband’s passport revoked and on how to get access to lawyers and NGOs.
