Jio users need to click on app to extend Prime membership

Contrary to rumors, Reliance Jio is not giving an automatic extension in Jio prime membership to all its users, but existing members have to ‘express their interest’ through the company’s selfcare application.

“Express your interest to get complimentary membership for the next 12 months,” the company said in a ‘how to’ statement for its existing Prime subscribers.

It also said that it will withdraw this option after some time.

“This is a limited period offer,” it added.

Prime membership entails its holders to cheaper tariffs and free addons such as content applications.

The company said it has 175 million members in the program.

“Members who have subscribed to the exclusive membership benefits till 31st March 2018 will get another year of complimentary PRIME benefits at NO additional fee,” it said..

“For new Jio users, the Jio Prime Membership continues to be available at an annual membership fees of Rs 99,” it added.

It is likely that those who subscribed to the one-year membership six months or eight months ago are also likely to see the option of extending their validity by one year, though the company did not specifically say so.

Jio Prime members get free access to apps like Jio Cinema, JioTV and Jio Music. The company’s TV app is by far the biggest in India with 550 channels, while its video-on-demand app has over 6,000 movies, according to the company.

The music app, meanwhile, has 1.4 cr (14 mln) songs, it said.

“With the on-going augmentation of content offerings and consumer engagement programs, Jio is gearing up to bring new and superior experiences with the PRIME program,” it added.
