Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 priced at just Rs 36,200 in India, surprising some

After much anticipation and suspense, Samsung has finally launched the most awaited Android tablet in India, its new Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 inch versions.

As forecast by RTN, Samsung launched the two products at a glittering ceremony in the capital, graced by bollywood star Lara Dutta.

The pricing of the bigger tablet has come as a positive surprise, as it has been priced at just Rs 36,200 or the same as iPad2, in India. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 was expected to be priced higher, but Samsung seems to have made a calculated move to price it as the same level as the iPad2, in many ways technologically inferior to the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Both come with 720p HD recording, 3 mega pixel cameras, an HD display and is lighter than the iPad2 — reasons that led many to believe that it would be priced at around Rs 40,000.

Motorola Xoom, which was launched a few days earlier, for example, was priced at around Rs 38,000.

Samsung’s move may be aimed at consolidating its position in the Indian market, where it was the first big brand to introduce the concept of the tablet, even as Apple dragged its feet on hitting the Indian shores.

The price of the smaller tablet, the Galaxy Tab 8.9, however, is along expected lines, at around Rs 34,000. It is likely to appeal to those who cherish portability above multimedia experience.

Both tablets come with the latest Android 3.1 Honeycomb operating system.
