SPECTRUM AUCTION 2016: Vodafone seen having bought pan-India 4G spectrum in final results

Though Vodafone has not revealed its purchases yet, the pattern of announcements so far indicates that the company has purchased 4G spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band across India.

The reason for this conclusion is that Bharti Airtel has been successful in buying 10 MHz (half of all) 2.3 GHz spectrum in most circles.

2.3 and 2.5 GHz are the primary capacity bands for 4G in India, and an operator must have 20 MHz of either of these for delivering decent speeds.

Since there was only 20 MHz on offer in 2.3 GHz hand, and Airtel managed to get half of it, that means that there was only 10 MHz left — too little for Vodafone.

The implies two things — Vodafone bought 20 to 30 MHz of 4G spectrum across circles in the 2.5 GHz band.

Secondly, the remaining 10 MHz of 2.3 band was acquired by Reliance Jio, which was also eyeing the block. Jio’s total purchases are likely to be comparable to Bharti Airtel’s or lower than that.

UPDATE — So far, the following companies have revealed their purchases.

In addition, the England-based company is likely to have acquired some 1800 MHz airwaves as well.
